It all starts with a good rewards credit card

First things first, start earning those airline miles by paying your bills with a credit card that offers rewards points. Why not earn points while paying off your bills? It’s a win-win! We recommend credit cards like the Chase Sapphire Preferred, American Express Platinum, and Capital One Venture.

Once you’ve got your credit card game on lock, it’s time to take advantage of airline rewards programs. Stick to one or two programs, find the right credit card, and do your best to earn Elite status by meeting credit card spend and flight requirements. Keep an eye out for bonus mile opportunities, use airline and credit card shopping portals, and redeem your rewards wisely.

But wait, there’s more! Keep an eye out for airline promotions through newsletters, social media, airline websites, travel websites, credit card offers, and third-party loyalty programs like Rocketmiles and Points.com. You never know what kind of bonus miles or discounts you might find!

Feeling extra generous? Volunteer to give up your seat on an overbooked flight and receive compensation in the form of travel vouchers. Share those PLUR vibes with someone who may need it and who knows, you might even get a refund for more than your plane ticket was worth.

And let’s not forget about frequent flyer programs. Some airlines offer rewards for things like dining or shopping, so check out your favorite airline’s rewards program to see what other ways you can earn miles.

Finally, keep an eye out for mistake fares on websites like Secret Flying or The Flight Deal. You never know when an airline might make a pricing error, resulting in steep discounts on flights.

When it comes to festival gear, there are some items that I would consider almost essential to thrive at events. They range from accessories, to clothes, to camping, and so much more. Having a reliable portable phone charger is SUPER important at festivals. Although I always recommend to use your phone battery sparingly (I can usually get my phone to last a day and a half to two days before I need to charge if I minimize use to pictures, videos, and occasional texting), you’ll eventually need it. If you’ve ever been to a music festival, then you understand the importance of stretching and taking care of your muscles. It’s a marathon- not a sprint! Although most festivals have yoga workshops available throughout the event, sometimes it’s nice to not try and cram into a ‘usually’ small space with others. Or, take the opportunity to go at your own pace in your own space.

5 Pro Tips for Music Festival Recovery

After a long weekend of festing, it’s easy to feel worn out, over stimulated, and ready to move into a vegetative state for AT LEAST three days. But, if you’re like me, then you know it’s not always possible to take that much time away from life (school, work, children, etc.). It’s essential to have a quick recovery after a long  weekend of running around and minimal amounts of sleep. So, I’m sharing my top 5 tips for a speedy music festival recovery.

1. Get your shit put away!

I’m terrible with this step usually, but when I do follow it, my life is sooo much less stressful! My excess of clothing and accessories after events is usually really overwhelming- especially when I’m already tired to boot.

By cleaning or at least moving items to their designated spots to be put away brings me a little more sanity and it becomes less of an overwhelming feeling! This goes for clothing, accessories, and gear!

2. Quick, Full Body Yoga session

Although moving a lot is usually LAST on my list after a festival, I know it’s so important to keep my limbs as loose as possible! I always go for a quick, full-body yoga session once I’ve cleaned up the house and feel like it’s time to start winding down.

Not only is it a great way to reflect on the weekend, but it’s also a great start to making space to prepare for the week ahead. I personally love Yoga with Adrienne, myself. Something about getting my favorite yoga mat out is so centering.

3. Epsom Salt Bath

Your muscle really take a beating after a long weekend of music festivals so giving them a load off is really important. An Epsom salt soak will alleviate the build up lactic acid in your muscles and sweat out any toxins.

I personally love these Epsom salts, but you can find a great option anywhere! I also highly recommend the pink Himalayan salt is also a great option.

4. intense, Skin Care

It’s no secret that your skin takes a beating over the duration of a festival- because really who’s thinking about lotion and serums when their favorite DJ is playing? And let’s not even mention the lack of makeup remover.

 

So, indulge your skin in an intense, self-care session. I always opt for a mask, roller/microderm, serums galore, and then finish it all up with my favorite Drunk Elephant B-Hydra Intensive Hydration gel.

The Must-Have Music Festival gear For Any Event

Everyone has those items that they take to every music festival- the gear that’s at the top of every packing list. So- I’m sharing all my music festival gear that comes to every event with me, ALWAYS! These items are my tested and true “go-to” products so I hope you find them as helpful as I always do!

Campsite

We all know it’s essential to bring along a tent and canopy and a tarp when you’re festival camping (you can find more of those festival campsite basics here). However, there are 100% other items that just make the overall camping experience so much more enjoyable. Here are the three items that are always in my festival campsite!

Situations always arise when you need scissors, a file, a knife, etc. at a festival. This guy alleviates all the stress of extra items and makes a great investment at the same time.

Although cooking a lot at a festival can be difficult, having something to warm your mac and cheese and boil water for coffee is a great thing. This cook-top stove is affordable, easy to transport, and easy to clean.

Having bandaids, aloe, ice packs, advil, and more is so important at any event! I recommend always keeping a first aid kit in your car regardless of where you are- but this one makes a great addition and has tons of great things.

Hydration Packs

We all know I love a good bag, which means I’m even more picky when it comes to using a reliable, quality item. Above are my two favorite stores to purchase a hydration pack/types of hydration packs that I highly recommend. Each pack caters to a different “type” of raver so make sure you get one that has enough space, padding, lining for your bladder, and extra pockets.

Inside the Venue

There are a few items that are always on me when it comes to being inside the venue! These items keep me overall more comfortable when I’m where the music is & are only a few of the items inside my music festival bag. Of course, it all comes down to personal preference so really sit down, think about what you use EVERY time you’re in the venue or wish you’d remembered to bring.

I highly recommend getting the double so you have space for you, your gear, or a friend! It also creates a great “blanket” if you wrap up in it at night.

I hate having bulky gear to carry around which is why I love these fans. They come with a clip and are so small and unobtrusive. They make a great addition to your bags or fanny packs and create a quick cool-down when you need it!

These are so great for people who don’t drink as much water as they should. Replenish and hydrate faster all the while having something delicious to drink!

When it comes to going to festivals, one of the biggest problems that I hear about are issues associated with cell phones and getting lost in the campgrounds. When your festing, it’s time to let the good times roll. I’m here to provide you all with some life-changing tips, tricks, and festival apps to thrive at your next fest and forget those “fuckin’ a” moments.

Cell Phones

This is THE biggest thing I get asked about when it comes to attending festivals:

• ‘What’s the service like?’
• ‘Will I actually be able to call/text my friends?’
• ‘What about the festival app? It won’t work without service right?’
• ‘Can I use google maps to get back to my tent?’

I’ll be honest- there are really only certain times that you’re going to get ‘good’ internet connection: during the early morning while everyone’s still sleeping (This is when I check my insta/snap/FB/Twit and attempt to check my emails) and into the wee early hours of the late night sets when people are making their way back to their tent.

Overcoming Shitty Cell Service

Service is usually not great when the event gets into full swing inside the actual venue, however, it definitely is more manageable/better when you’re out in the campgrounds. If you’re bad about losing your friends or are trying to meet up with people here are some tips to do it successfully:

• Dedicate a time and meet-up spot throughout the day to re-group just in case you get separated inside the venue
• When it comes to texting, be sure to TYPE the time you sent the message INTO THE BODY of the text message. Although it will say it’s ‘delivered’, there’s a very real possibility that the person hasn’t received it on the other end. Time stamping will ensure that once your text actually makes it to the other person in real time, they’ll know when it was actually sent. (This is another reason why you should designate a meet-up spot and time)
• When it comes to Find My Friends, people will say this works, personally, my phone is never able to actually find anyone. It will usually just show me they’re in our campgrounds (which is likely the last place they got enough connection to send a location)

The Official Festival App

Most large scale festivals will also provide attendees with an app. These usually include features that will allow them to do a couple of different things:

• Check set times (some will even give you alerts for the sets. Others allow you to put them into your phone calendar for alerts)
• See an interactive map of the campgrounds
• See where you and your friends most recently ‘checked-in’. (This is a feature on the Bonnaroo app. It allows you to see where your friends have scanned their entry bracelets so you can meet up!)
• They also will usually work with or without service (oh hell yeah)

Camping Tips

Camping festivals are notorious for random people showing up in your campsite. It’s bound to happen to you and your friends eventually. This is usually because people get confused, or turned around when trying to make their way back to sleep. Here are some tips to avoid losing your campsite, drunk as hell or nah:

• Mark your campsite with your own flag/extra large totem. Flags are easy to spot during the day and usually are illuminated decently well at night.
• Be sure to check out WHERE in the campgrounds you are (they will usually have road signs (EF) or pod/plaza/section (Bonnaroo) numbers that are identifiable day or night)

Festival Apps to Consider

Although service can be shit when you’re festing, there are a couple of festival apps that I highly recommend checking out!

Utility Apps

• Battery Life Doctor (Pro) – Pretty self-explanatory, but worth the mention if it’s something you’ll think you’ll use. This app is just like battery doctor. It will show you how much battery, memory, and storage you still have on your phone. Although it won’t ‘save’ your battery, it does give an accurate time of how much longer your battery will last.
• YourFestivalPigeon – This is a newer app, but is essentially the same as any regular ‘Tent Finder’ app. This one is completely free and actually allows you to utilize it WITHOUT service. You’re able to drop pins for your tent location, food location, etc. all around your festival grounds. To show your friends where you are, just share the QR code in the app. From there, it will take them to your shared location! Pretty nifty right? Another bonus is that it’s totally free.

Health Apps

• Aid by American Red Cross – This app was created by the Red Cross to provide additional medical information/suggestions for care for anyone who needs it. This makes it an ideal aid app for festivals. For you Brits out there, be sure to check out Aid by British Red. This is the UK version created by the British Red Cross.
• Drink Water Reminder N Tracker – Personally, I like this app over other drinking water apps. This app gathers information about your weight and gender, and then creates reminders for when it’s time to drink water! During the festival season, it can be easy to forget to drink water with so much fun around you. Head over here to learn more about staying hydrated at music festivals!

So there it is! All of my lifestyle hacks that will make sure you’re festival ready. These festival apps and tricks are a sure-fire way to be prepared with your squad.

This week, I’m super excited about the topic we’re talking about. This was a collaboration with an amazing company in the EDM Community, The Festival Voice. If you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend it. They’re known as the voice of the festival people and their articles put you all up in the feels, along with tons of really awesome information about festivals in general. I’m talking about what got me into this beautiful, crazy EDM world that I live in- I’m talking about PLUR. Not only the lifestyle of PLUR at festivals but how you can incorporate it into your everyday life too.

1.First and foremost- be good to your rave family.

They’re with you through it all- the late night sunrise sets, the ‘fuck this’ and ‘fuck you’s’ that always happens during campsite set up, and even just the moments when you find them in the crowd and are so hype. These moments happen- be grateful for the people you have in your life and remember, not everyone is perfect. We accept and love the people around us for their perfections and imperfections.

2. Be kind to others.

So simple- but honestly can be overlooked so easily. Festivals and raves are a safe place for people to break away from everyday reality and channel their inner ‘being’. Compliment and outfit that you like, tell someone they’re a great dancer or flow artist, or just simply help someone out if they need a little assistance. This can and should be utilized in the regular world. I believe what you put out into the universe will come back full fledge- make sure you’re putting something good out there.

3. Share the love!

Whether it’s just fanning someone off in the crowd, asking if they’re okay when they’re looking down, or just dancing with random people that look hype! Don’t be afraid to socialize and get to know other people, and let other people get to know you! Festivals and raves are one of the few places that I feel my social anxieties die away (especially my approach anxiety) and it’s a great feeling! Feel free to let loose and enjoy the time away from reality and IRL expectations. Over time, shedding those anxieties in festivals has helped me to start shedding them IRL too. Sometimes all you need is practice! So what better place to do it than at a festival or rave?

4. Always be aware of your surroundings.

Dancing, walking, flowing, moshing, or just bobbing are all amazing ways to express yourself at a festival, however, be aware of your fellow ravers around you and of yourself in general. Be sure to give yourself and everyone else enough space (respectively to where you are in the crowd).

5. Be OPEN and keep an OPEN mind.

There are so many different things to experience at an EDM event- be open to those experiences! Whether that’s sitting down for a glove show, going to sound therapy or just seeing people from all different walks of life. Give everything (and everyone) an opportunity. Expanding your horizons and understanding can only stand to breed unity and respect amongst us all.

6. Help those who are lost or just looking for new friends!

Festivals and raves alike can be big, and there are tons of people and the cell service is always bad. If you see someone who looks lonely, or if someone just comes up and seems nice and wants to dance, be open to it. I’ve met some great people while dancing in the crowd and it’s lead to friendships that have lasted long past the festival/rave where I met them at.

7. Don’t take your fellow ravers things.

If you see something on the ground or, just laying around, try and get it back to the owner. You have no idea how many times I’ve seen beautiful souls posting on festival Facebook pages looking for lost goods. But also- don’t be that asshole taking people’s stuff. Make that person’s day by returning something they lost instead! Imagine how you’d feel. Pass along the good karma.

Now that festival season is in full swing it’s time to talk about the ever famous topic of health and hydration. That’s right- but instead of harping on all of the things that you SHOULDN’T do, I’m going to be telling you about all of the things that you SHOULD be doing. And how to bridge the gap when sometimes the best way isn’t an option. This is the first is a huge health series that I’m going to be releasing for you all because honestly- taking care of yourself at a festival is SO IMPORTANT. And so easy if you just make a little conscious effort.

I by no means am a health expert, however, I am someone who is confident in their research and have personally utilized these tips below to survive several festivals over my lifetime. I’ve also linked the articles where I found specific information. I highly encourage you all to do your due diligence and do research on staying hydrated and alternative ways to do so!

Drink Enough Water/Fluids

Obviously- enough said. This is one of the easiest ones in the book, however, here’s some knowledge that I bet you DIDN’T know you should know. Cuz I sure didn’t and it honestly changed how I’m able to take care of myself at festivals! As a general rule, the average person is recommended to drink about 2 liters a day.

• DON’T WAIT UNTIL YOU ARE ALREADY THIRSTY. By that point, you’ve lost up to 2 cups of water! Carrying around a hydration pack is a great way to stay sippin’ on that agua all day long.
• Water makes up about 75% of the human body and is important for several bodily functions like flushing the body of ‘toxins’, maintains equilibrium, balancing hormones and supporting brain function.
• According to Live Science, water is also responsible for taking heat away from muscles, which is what prevents organs and muscles from being damaged. It’s also what prevents heat stroke.
• Quench that coffee/tea addiction while you’re at it- according to the National Research Council’s Food and Nutrition Board– the caffeine content discount the water/fluid inside them! *whee*
• Obviously- avoid drinking loads of alcohol with no water. It’s a natural dehydrator and overdoing it in the summer can lead to dehydration at an even quicker rate than normal!

Hydrate at Premo Times

WHEN you drink your water is just as important as drinking it in general. It doesn’t do you any good if you try and rehydrate after you’ve already realized you’re dehydrated!

• You should start AND end your day with 1 cup (8 fl. oz/250 ml) of water.
• BEFORE you start your day at the festival, drink some water (target 1- 1.5 cups every 20 minutes or so before you leave for optimum hydration)

#RaveHack: If you’re going to go extended periods of time between drinks or performing strenuous activity in the heat, consider adding a sports drink to the mix. This will give you added electrolytes and carbohydrates to help rehydration.

Consider Fruits, Veggies, and Juices as a Replacement for Water

If you’re not feeling the water bus, you can also get hydration from several other sources! Fruits and veggies are a great alternative and there are tons of ones out there that are perfect for festival season.

• It’s recommended to get about 5 cups of fruits and veggies per day (according to Live Science)
• For juices (V8, orange juice, etc.) should be diluted to 50% juice, and 50% water. According to Live Science, this balances out the number of electrolytes and carbs to optimal absorption rates for staying hydrated
• According to Clean Eating Mag, great fruits and veggies to consider into your festival diet due to their high water percentage are blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, lemons, bananas, watermelon, cucumber, celery, and kale.

Check Your Electrolytes, Sodium and Carbohydrate Intake

These three things are essential to remaining hydrated in the heat. Supplementing them to your diet while you’re festing is also SUPER easy- probably more so than you think!

• Eat salty foods for your pre-festival meals, or consider adding some salt to your sports drink
• At the end of the day, make sure to eat some protein (to aid in muscle building), carbs to refuel muscle, and electrolytes to replenish what you lost in sweat.

Stay Alert for Dehydration

Relatively simple, but worth mentioning. Here are some great tips for monitoring your level of dehydration:

• If the color of your urine is dark colored, this is an indication of dehydration. You should aim for a light yellow color, according to SportMedBC
• Symptoms of dehydration are thirst, headache, constipation, fatigue, weakness, dizziness, irritability, cramps, vomiting, and nausea
