At the beginning of 2022, Subtronics wowed Cyclops Nation with the album, FRACTALS. After years stuck in a pandemic, he was ready to bring us all back on tour with him for this amazing new album. Outside of new music, he brought along stunning new visuals and a new stage! Needless to say, he came to throw down.

About The Album

Debuting on his personal record label, Cyclops Records, Subtronics dropped the 16-track album FRACTALS. This completely diverse lineup boasts bass anthems, electro-pop cuts, and outrageous sound experiments — this album was a year-long creation for the EDM DJ. Coming out of the 2-year long COVID-19 pandemic, cyclops nation has devoured this album with little to NO negative feedback which… is kind of unheard of today! So keep kill it, Subs! We see you.

The FRACTALS tour is a massive, 53-date tour, I got the AWESOME opportunity to see him at my hometown venue. Although I will say my home venue did not do his full stage-show justice, it was still SO awesome and I can only imagine how amazing it is with a full-screen stage. 

Starting with the “supporting” acts- but let’s be real- they were all headlines so HELL YEAH. There’s nothing I love more than tickets to a show where I get to see headliners playing together. At my stop, we got to see Boogie T, Level Up Dub, and of course, Subtronics. The event ended up getting upgraded to a larger room in our venue location too which was super exciting. Not only did it mean better airflow, but it meant more space for social distancing which was really appreciated. Shout out Old National Center!

The Show

With Subtronics closing out the night, I was truly so excited. He’s played so many mixes that he’s been sharing snippets of Instagram for months- so when they finally dropped it was SO exciting. Not to mention, the visuals that he brought to the show were OUTSTANDING- it is probably even crazier for those that are able to see it on full-screen!  

The diversity of the show, ranging from trending songs to oldie favorites, to album hits- the crowd really enjoyed themselves. It was also greatly appreciated that he gave us a few “programmed” breaks during his set lol.  As always, the live show was a treat with some new and unheard mixes! He even played Blastin’ which is a personal favorite for me! 

Overall, the FRACTALS tour was a true treat! If you have an opportunity to see this tour I highly recommend it. The lineup itself is worth buying a ticket RIGHT NOW, but the production level behind it is also super impressive. Subtronics always creates an amazing experience, and with a debut album like this, the tour 100% stands up to the hype.

Question of the Week

A name that we all know and love- ILLENIUM. An artist that not only makes you want to bang your head but also sing and cry to heartfelt lyrics and melodies. In my time going to festivals and shows, I’ve seen this amazing artist at least twice every year since 2017. It’s amazing how far he has come since seeing him at The Other Stage at Bonnaroo 2017, to now seeing the ILLENIUM Ascend Tour.

Although I’ve never played into the hype of ‘tours’ (I always love the shows and fully appreciate the effort and love that goes into each and every production), I definitely played into this tour’s hype. For such good reason though. This tour was everything people hyped it up to be and more.

About the Ascend Album

The Ascend Album was a highly anticipated project. When the first of the songs debuted as singles (“Good Things Fall Apart” ft. Jon Bellion, “Pray” ft. Kameron Alexander and “Take Away” ft. Chainsmokers and Lennon Stella, to name a few) in early 2019, fans were in awe. Many claimed (and I completely agree) that these are some of our favorite ILLENIUM songs to date. Shortly after, the announcement two huge headlining shows hit the headlines. One at Madison Square Gardens and the other at Red Rocks. It was clear after this, that an extended project was coming.

Fast forward, and the Ascend Album drops. I must say- the anticipation of this album (even for me) was high. His team did an outrageously awesome job at marketing and promoting the shit out of the album. However, the anticipation did not disappoint.

As if Illenials didn’t already have enough to be excited about- the tour dates announcement was possibly even better? This tour, obviously, was aimed to promote the new album, but there were also special dates on the tour. These dates were paying homage to the throwback songs. The oldies, but goodies, that everyone has heard in a DJ set at this point.

The ILLENIUM Ascend Tour

I actually got the chance to see the Ascend Tour twice this year. One of the throwback shows in DC (which was amazing) and one normal show in Indianapolis. I can honestly say ‘wow’– I was expecting next level production, but it was even better than I thought it would be. Not only were the lights and visuals fantastic, but the crowd and artists brought a vibe that honestly made me feel like I was back in a field at a festival. That’s some next-level kind of feels, yanno.

Throwback Set (Echo Stage, Washington D.C.)

I found ILLENIUM at the beginning of my real EDM career (probably my senior year of college?). Anyway- I had high hopes for this set because of the old songs that I loved so much. I was potentially even a little anxious he wouldn’t play one of them? lol

I’m happy to announce the anxiety didn’t hold on for long once the set started. He shook me. The entire show was everything I hoped for- and more. He played every single song I hoped he would play. Not to mention I was reuniting with my rave family for this show for the first time since Forest. The overall production of the show was great.

Ascend Tour (Old National Center, Indianapolis)

Getting to see this show was truly a treat. Old National is a frequent stop for me throughout the years. I personally love the rooms they host in- the sound is great and the bass is overwhelmingly beautiful. Seeing ILLENIUM here was up there with my favorite shows. Not only did the music sound amazing, but of course the production level was 20/10.

Per usual on the Ascend Tour, there was a live aspect to the music. For this stop, it featured Dabin, Said the Sky, Day, and Anna Clendening. All played live pieces that were beyond impressive. Dabin not only played in the band but also his own live set leading up to ILLENIUM.

Dabin’s set was full of his top songs, as well as remixes with heavy drops that got the crowd going. Sadly, you couldn’t see a lot of his visuals during his show. The venue stage was small and ILLENIUM’s stage took up most of the space. HOWEVER- watching him play live was way more enjoyable (in my opinion).

After Dabin’s set was a very brief intermission before ILLENIUM took the stage (and crowd) away. The show built and fell within a magnificent wave of bass and melodies. Throughout the entire show, the voices singing almost drowned out the tracks singing.

The Indianapolis scene has a preference for heavier music, and boy oh boy, did he give us all that we hoped for. Featuring tons of VIP remixes that honestly… I’m hoping will get released to the mass public very soon.

Overall, the show was beyond words. ILLENIUM and his team brought together a magical experience. Not only giving fans the chance to scream their hearts out to their favorite songs but giving them something to get rowdy too as well. ILLENIUM- please come back to Indy soon!

About Young Bombs

This DJ-Producer duo (Martin Kottmeier and Tristan Norton) has been hitting the festival/EDM circuit with vigor this year. After meeting in high school over a passion for music, these two have traversed the music/entertainment space in various facets before getting the EDM bug back in 2011. Since then, they’ve popped up at huge name festivals such as Lollapalooza and Ultra.

The Interview

So guys, how did you all actually end up meeting?

Martin: We actually met in high school. We were both in punk bands at the time, I was a drummer and Tristan was a guitarist.

Tristan: Our two bands weren’t that good or necessarily going anywhere, so we decided to team up and kind of make our own music.

Martin: We actually did a bunch of different types of music before we found ourselves making EDM music. We did jingles, were background band for a singer and then we caught the EDM bug in 2011.

Tristan: It actually started because of an Avicii song in 2011 and we thought “We want to make music that makes you feel like this”.

So, you’re preparing to go up and throw-down for Haunted Fest. How does that make you feel?

Martin: We’re super excited about the set. We like to go up there and have fun.

Do you both have a ritual that you go through before going up?

Martin: It honestly changes from show to show.

Tristan: It all just depends on how we’re feeling and what we want to do to get ready.

Your new song with Aloe Blacc is dropping next week, what was it like collaborating with him?

Tristan: It was amazing.

Martin: We had actually been sitting on the song ‘Better Day’ for a while and always thought that Aloe Blacc would be perfect for the track.

Tristan: It was a dream come true when we were able to lock it down because it was Avicci and Aloe Blacc’s song together back in 2011/2010 that really inspired us to get into EDM music, so getting to collaborate with him was crazy and awesome.

Martin: It was a twist of fate that we got connected with him. We sent him the song and he immediately wanted in on it. We ended up flying to LA to finish cutting it together with him.

What would you say your ‘signature sound’ is?

Martin: Oh wow, *laughing*, we honestly focus on just creating and remixing songs that we know people love.

Tristan: We love taking songs that are popular and adding our own weird twist on things to make it our own. But no ‘signature sounds’ yet.

I clearly see your passion and feel it when I listen to your music. What’s driven you to overcome the challenges you’ve faced since becoming Young Bombs?

Tristan: On the come-up it was hard. We would go to shows and sometimes I would just find a person who was at the event with me and would crash on their floor/couch. Wake up the next day and off to the next show. It can be a lot but being on stage and making music make it worth it.

You guys have been traveling quite a bit- where can we expect to see you in 2020?

Martin: We don’t currently have anything set in stone for 2020 yet.

Tristan: But, we’d love to make it to EDC and Bonnaroo. Those are two festivals that are definitely at the top of the list.

Recently, Saint Punk released an exciting new bootleg of the popular Nirvana song “Smells Like Teen Spirit”. I even had the awesome opportunity to get some time with Saint Punk himself to learn more about his inspiration and creative process behind the song!

I don’t know about anyone else, but being the 90’s baby that I am, my parents raised me on grunge rock and classic oldies. Although I don’t find myself listening to it as much nowadays, but when artists remix those songs it gets me ALL in my feels.

The Song

When I was initially sent this song I was skeptical- how could anyone beat out Nirvana? A classic oldie that I personally have some deep connections to, I wasn’t sure I would like the song. But turns out? I LOVE IT.

Upon my first listen, I was honestly shocked at Saint Punks ability to remix this song, while still being able to maintain its iconic grunge essence. I continued to listen to the song on repeat a couple of times and the more I listened? The more I loved it. I was getting all of my favorite grunge vibes, while still catering to my intense passion for EDM music.

The song still boasts the original grunge rock base. However, as we build-up to the drop, it moves into a fast-paced dance song. I’m hopeful that once Saint Punk starts touring, I’ll get the chance to go wild on the dance floor to this song. Give it a listen and tell me what you think!

Interview With Saint Punk

As a new an emerging artist on the scene, Saint Punk is quickly making a name for himself. With a background in rock music, he’s channeling that rock background into a new blend of rock/house EDM. His newest bootleg release, Smells Like Teen Spirit, could be considered his debut into that space. I got the amazing opportunity to catch up with him after the release, here’s what he had to say.

Teen Spirit is an iconic grunge rock song, what made you pick that song?

Saint Punk: I’ve always loved Nirvana, and Smells Like Teen Spirit is one of their best songs and one of the best songs ever really. I really wanted to put my spin on it.

What did the creative process look like for you? Was it a long process? Or was it a song that you already had a good idea of what direction you wanted to take?

Saint Punk: This one came to me pretty quick. I had already mapped it out in my head for I just needed to get it down. What took me the longest was actually quantizing the stems. For some reason, they were all over the place. I had to go through them beat by beat and make sure they were on the grid.

With your background in rock music, can we continue to expect more rock-influenced song from you in the future?

Saint Punk: Definitely! Both originals and remixes.

With the transition from rock music to EDM, what’s been the biggest challenge/obstacle you’ve faced?

Saint Punk: Anyone with a computer can start making electronic music these days, so the electronic scene is definitely more saturated than the full band rock scene. It’s a lot harder to stand out from the crowd.

Needless to say, we can continue to expect big things from this artist. Although he hasn’t set anything in stone in terms of tours, new music and releases are without a doubt on the horizon. Make sure you subscribe to know when news comes on this up and coming artist!

The Artists

Alison Wonderland

I’ve had the opportunity to Alison several different times, at several different venue settings. This time was by far the best experience seeing her. Unfortunately, I missed the beginning 15 minutes of her set due to a ticket malfunction (aka: my ticket got lost @ will call), but let me say the remaining almost hour that she played was amazing. She played fan and personal favorites throughout the entire show, including ‘Church’ and ‘Easy’ from her most recent album ‘Awake’.

The visuals were also out of this world. The colors and movements were spectacular, and the visuals being in sync with her body motions were also A-W-E-S-O-M-E. The highlight for me was getting to see her play her cello live. She opened with almost a soft, acoustic version of ‘Awake’, and then segwayed into her cello piece. It’s soft instrumental tone behind Alison’s voice singing awake was magical- it literally gave me chills. If you haven’t had the opportunity to see her, you are absolutely missing out.

Dillon Francis

This was my first opportunity getting to see this house music legend, and let me say it was not a disappointment. Since I got the opportunity to work as a member of the Press, I got the chance to film the first 15 minutes of the show IN FRONT of the rail! It was everything. He closed out the night before their B2B at the end and started it all up with Bohemian Rhapsody. He got the entire crowd singing along- sharing the good vibes with one another. Francis brought down the house with some amazing heavy vibes, and even throwing in his signature style, Moombahton. He lit up the venue with beautiful graphics- some of them funny and others taking me into a tropical paradise. At one point in the show, there were even Geralds being thrown into the crowd from the stage! At one point my friend looked at me and said ‘He’s like the excision of house music’.

Alison Wonderland B2B Dillon Francis

Although I would classify these artists’ ‘sound’ as very different, their B2B was absolutely fantastic. Not only did they have some amazingly deep bass, but they also had some really fun transitions. Dillon and Alison’s sounds were very complimentary- her heavy bass really complementing his deep house and energetic beats. Aside from obviously how great they sounded together, the artists very clearly had great energy on stage. Throughout the entire show they were smiling and growing off of each others energy. The visuals associated with the tour were also fantastic. If you’re looking to get a taste, head over to Spotify on mobile to check them out!

The Venue

Alison and Dillon closed out the tour at Stage AE in Pittsburgh, PA. It wasn’t my first time attending this particular venue, but it was definitely my best experience to date. The overall area is generally decent– it is known for having a fair amount of homeless people in the summer. Parking is also relatively easy depending on what you’re looking for- there’s a large parking garage (location here) across from the venue, and then tons of parking along the street. Disclaimer: This is a large bar strip, so if you’re trying to get parking on the street, you need to arrive early. Inside the venue, I was relatively pleased! Security was on the peripherals of the show and seemed relatively lax about things- however, you do have to go through a metal detector before entering the venue (VIP OR GA). The only time I saw security intervention was to tell girls to quit riding shoulders, so I would consider that a win. The airflow I thought wasn’t bad- although I didn’t spend the entire time in the crowd, I didn’t find myself absolutely dying at any point.

Overall, the show was everything I hoped it would be and then some. Both artists played some amazing songs and really were just beyond fun to watch. Alison’s cello was probably the highlight of my night, but Francis came in and really blew me away with his overall performance (and flying Geralds (see here)). The venue did a great job containing the crowd and its airflow was pretty decent. If you haven’t had the chance to see Alison or Dillon live, make sure you see if they’re coming somewhere close to you! (Check 2019 tour and festival lists here).

For this week’s Feature Friday I’m talking about the highlight anticipated new song created by Alison Wonderland x Dillon Francis. This duo has been teasing their fans since EDCLV 2018 after playing their new collab live. Since then the two have announced that they’re not only collabing together, but they’re touring together too in 2019! You can thank Croatia going to the World Cup for bringing these guys together.

The Song: ‘Lost My Mind’

Dropping today, the song has been highly anticipated! The song already has 24k views on Youtube, boasting similar numbers on Spotify. It channels Wonderlands deep bass that she’s known for. The track also features vocals done by Wonderland. Although the song isn’t necessarily the ‘banger’ that I was anticipating, it channels my favorite parts of both artists. The song really flows from one artist to the other.

Wonderland (alias: Alex Sholler) is an Aussie DJ that’s skyrocketed in the EDM world over the past couple of years. She’s headlined major festival including Tomorrowland, Lollapalooza, and EDCLV. This American born DJ has created his own genre (Moombahton), and has had several Grammy-nominated albums. Like Wonderland, Dillon Francis has headlined huge festivals all over the world including TomorrowWorld, Electric Zoo and Ultra. He’s also had the chance to work with big-name artists like Skrillex, Bro Safari and NGHTMRE.

Outside of his impressive resume of festivals and artists he’s attended/collaborated with, he’s developed a huge social media presence to boot. With 2.1M followers on Instagram, Dillon and his pet piñata Gerald (51.4k followers), boast a colorful feed full of selfies, captured show moments, funny bloopers and more.
